Dyeing Fabric Inspired by My Cousin’s Double Bass and Mt. Sopris

I have been commissioned by my cousin to create a quilt inspired by Mt Sopris, the bass clef, and his upright bass. Almost immediately I made a sketch. He sent photos. Based on the colors in the photos I did the math to dye families of color samples.

Then I dyed sample fabrics to work out the final color combinations.

For each color I dyed four values (like the brown and purple fabrics) or four different combinations of the two base colors (like the balance of yellow and blue in the green fabrics)

Then I overdyed each of three fabrics of the same value with three different colors.

I LOVE dyeing fabric!

Based on the above sample fabrics, I dyed final fabrics for the quilt. The sky fabric took three tries. First try the top yellow fabric was too pale and lemony. Second try the yellow was golden enough, but I didn't like how the fuchsia was so isolated and blotchy. Even though that had been my original goal, I didn't like it. So I started over and really love the final fabric where the fuchsia and yellow blend more to create areas of rich oranges.
