Observation Drawing for Beginners (ages 5-10)

  • Outlining what you see: learn to use gestural lines to outline small objects on your table.

  • Drawing a variety of textures: learn to draw a variety of textures (smooth, furry, scaly, spiky, rough, etc.)

  • Picasa inspired Bouquet of Flowers with arm and hand: Refer to photos of flowers to draw a bouquet of flowers. Finish off the bouquet by adding cut out tracing of your hand and arm holding the bouquet.

  • Bedroom or Playroom Still-life: arrange several items from your bedroom or playroom into a simple still-life, then draw what you see. Apply previous skills and add concepts of proportion and overlapping.

  • Drawing Nature objects: Really focus on using texture to draw nature objects from observation (focusing on small immobile objects that can be placed on your table.)

  • Invent a Toy: Referring to photos or physical toys, combine parts of several toys to invent a new toy that looks realistic.

6-8 week session includes these or similar projects based on student’s interest and skill level.
