Biology and Mythology of Animals Art and Science Summer Camp
Creating Amazing Creatures While Learning About Birds, Bugs, and Other Animals
We dissected owl pellets during Biology and Mythology of Animals camp this past week. Campers found skulls of various sizes and many smaller bones. One camper even discovered a bird skull with a beak and a bundle of feathers, which was especially exciting.
Over the course of the week we also identified animal close-ups, drew what we thought animals would look like based just on their skeletons, matched animals to their skeletons, learned about bugs, compared bird beaks to various household tools based on their jobs, learned about mythical creatures across time and cultes. Of course we also created a variety of animals using a variety of drawing, painting, and printing techniques.
Inspired by the animals we studies we created Sumi-e painted doodle creatures, ink blot creatures, symmetric name insects, symmetric paint blob creatures, food webs, and squeaky birds. I especially like the animals they created based on skeletons of actual animals. Can you recognize the Bowhead whale skeleton? How about the Giraffe skeleton? It is amazing how different an animal we can create based on a skeleton of a familiar animal.
At the end of the week we bound all our animal creations into a Bestiary book to show families during our Art Exhibit. To end our week of camp together we taught family members to play "Bat Echolocation Tag" with us.
